What Does "Broadcast-Ready" Mean?
At its core, broadcast-ready means a deliverable has cleared separate quality checks and received formal sign-off. The checks are technical spec compliance against the destination platform's exact delivery requirements along with creative quality control confirming the piece looks and sounds the way it's supposed to. Passing one without the other doesn't cut it. A deliverable that's graded, mixed, and otherwise ready to watch can still bounce if the loudness is out of spec, the wrapper is wrong, or the color pops a little too much.
What Does Technical QC Check?
Technical QC is machine-measurable. It confirms the deliverable matches a platform's written spec, not whether its content is worth watching. That typically includes:
- Codec, wrapper, resolution, and frame rate
- Color space and bit depth
- Audio channel configuration and loudness
- Blanking, flash frames, and other digital artifacts
- Closed caption or subtitle file format and timing
Automated tools like Venera QC, Qscan, and Telestream Vidchecker flag errors faster than a human watching in real time. But automation only checks against the spec it's given. If the spec sheet is wrong, incomplete, or built for the wrong platform, the file can pass automated QC and still get rejected downstream.
What Does Creative QC Review, and Who Signs Off on It?
Creative QC is the human pass. It asks does everything look and sound good, not whether it's in spec. A post supervisor, colorist, or finishing artist reviews for shot-to-shot color consistency, effects integration, dialogue clarity and mix balance, graphics accuracy, and caption timing against picture. Depending on the complexity, deliverable sign-off isn't a single event, but a layered approval. Deliverables usually clear an internal QC pass at the finishing facility first, then client / producer approval, then the receiving platform's own independent QC after ingest.
Why Picture Lock isn't the Finish Line
Picture lock means the story stops changing, but there's still work to be done and specs to adhere to. Conforming to full-resolution media, color grading, mixing to a target loudness spec, formatting captions, and packaging the file, whether IMF, DCP, or a platform-specific wrapper, all happen after picture lock. When the story's hit its schedule, delivery delays to networks and streamers can often trace back to these last pieces of conform. Loudness and caption timing account for most of those post-lock rejections. The fix is building the delivery spec and adequate conform time into the project from the start, so it's never a race to retrofit after the fact.
Because "broadcast-ready" isn't standardized. A vendor may mean the cut is finished and graded without having checked it against the receiving platform's actual technical spec. Rejection usually happens at the platform's own QC pass, which is the first time the file is checked against that specific spec.
Codec, wrapper, resolution, frame rate, color space and bit depth, audio channel configuration, loudness (LUFS/LKFS and true peak), timecode continuity, and caption or subtitle format and timing. Each platform sets its own values for these, so a spec that passes one destination can fail another.
At minimum three: an internal technical and creative QC pass at the finishing facility, a client or producer approval pass, and the receiving platform's own QC after ingest. Projects with tighter delivery windows benefit from adding a spec-compliance check earlier, during conform, rather than waiting until the final export.
